Can You Handle the Truth?

Scripture: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” — John 16:13

I recently saw a memorable clip from the courtroom scene in the movie A Few Good Men that has become iconic. In the scene, Colonel Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson, is under cross-examination by Lt. Daniel Kaffee, played by Tom Cruise. When Kaffee presses him for the truth about the “Code Red,” Jessup erupts with the famous line:

“You can’t handle the truth!”

The scene goes on to argue that harsh actions are necessary to protect the nation, making it one of the most quoted moments in American cinema.

I wonder if that same question confronts us in our walk with Jesus.

Can we really handle the truth?

Not the truth we want to hear. Not the truth that agrees with our opinions or comforts our decisions. But the truth Jesus speaks into our lives through His Word and by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would guide them into all truth. That sounds encouraging until we realize that truth often requires change. Truth exposes that many times we are walking our own way. Truth reveals our selfishness. Truth uncovers the things we are trying to hide. Truth leads us to redemption. Truth calls us to forgive when we would rather hold a grudge. Truth refuses to leave us stuck in ourselves. Truth asks us to trust God when we would rather remain in control.

Perhaps that is why walking with Jesus can feel so difficult.

The struggle is not that Jesus’ way is unclear. More often, the struggle is that we are still trying to walk our own way. We want Jesus to bless our plans instead of surrendering to His. We want enough of Jesus to give us peace, but not so much that He changes us.

Yet Jesus never called us to admire Him from a distance. He called us to follow Him.

Following Jesus means surrender. It means laying down our will so that His will becomes our desire. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to lovingly reveal the places where we still need to grow and then having the courage to obey.

The understanding I believe we need to embrace is this: the Holy Spirit never reveals truth to condemn those who belong to Christ. He reveals truth to restore us, shape us, and make us more like Jesus.

Today, instead of asking God to simply make your path easier, perhaps pray a different prayer:

“Lord, help me handle Your truth. Show me where I am still walking my own way. Give me the courage to surrender completely so that I may faithfully walk with Jesus.”

The closer we walk with Jesus, the more we discover that the truth is not something to fear.

The truth is the very path that leads us to where Christ desires us to be. When we surrender to His truth, we discover that every step of obedience draws us closer to Him. That is what it truly means to walk with Jesus.
