Walking Together Toward Jesus

Scripture: “All the believers were together and had everything in common… Every day they continued to meet together… praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” — Acts 2:44–47
One of the things I have been thinking about this morning is that not all of us follow Jesus in exactly the same way. Our journeys are different. We come from different backgrounds, worship in different churches, sing different songs, and have different gifts and callings. Yet if we are truly following Jesus, we are all headed toward the same destination. Or at the very least we should be.
Jesus never called His disciples to become copies of one another. He simply said, “Follow Me.”
The methods may look different, but the mission has never changed.
Our purpose is to walk with Jesus, to seek His righteousness, to become more like Him, and then to obey His command to go and make disciples. That is the calling placed upon every believer.
So I find myself asking a difficult question.
If we have all heard the same invitation, “Come, follow Me,” and we have all received the same Great Commission to “Go,” why do we so often walk alone?
The early church didn’t.
Acts tells us they were together. They were not defined by denominations, buildings, color, or anything else, they were one. They prayed together, worshiped together, served together, shared together, and God worked through them together. Their unity became one of the greatest testimonies to the world around them. We receive glimpses of that and most recently in this community through prayers for healing and wholeness.
John Wesley once challenged the Church by saying, “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God… and they alone will shake the gates of hell.” Wesley understood something we often forget. God’s people accomplish far more when they move together than when they compete with one another.
Yet today we often stay in our own lanes. I’m not simply talking about denominations. Even people in churches that love Jesus, believe the same Scriptures, and desire to see people saved sometimes struggle to encourage, support, and labor alongside one another.
Imagine what could happen if our greatest concern was not building our own church, but building the Kingdom of God.
Imagine pastors and churches gathering together to pray for one another instead of competing for more in worship. Or just being a church to pay the bills and keep the doors open. We are to number and money driven.
Imagine congregations celebrating what God is doing across their communities instead of only within their own walls. Now if we are in a community where nothing is happening there is no better time than now to say I am going to be, to lead, to pray, to be bold, for Jesus and to be a great commission follower.
Imagine believers linking arms to reach those who have never met Jesus.
Perhaps that is part of what Jesus prayed for in John 17: “That they may all be one… so that the world may believe.”
We may walk different roads, but we are following the same Savior toward the same mission.
Maybe it’s time we started walking together.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling each of us to follow You. Forgive us for allowing pride, tradition, or preference to separate us from brothers and sisters who also love You. Unite Your Church around Your mission. Help us seek Your Kingdom before our own success and rejoice whenever Your name is lifted high. Teach us to walk together so that the world may see You through us. Amen.
