Healing on the Inside – A Walk with Jesus for ourselves.

Walking with Jesus

Healing on the Inside

Scripture: “Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit.” — Ezekiel 18:31

A friend of mine recently shared with me that he had to have surgery on his hand. He had suffered a severe cut in the area between his thumb and pointer finger. The wound was treated, sutured, and after several days the sutures were removed. From the outside, everything appeared to be healing just fine.

But then he noticed something.

The area became sore. It was hot to the touch. Something wasn’t right.

He went back to the emergency room, and they discovered that although the wound looked good on the outside, there was infection on the inside. Surgery would be necessary to open the area, clean out the infection, and allow true healing to take place.

I haven’t been able to get that picture and thought out of my mind. Everything looked healed on the outside, while something dangerous and infectious remained on the inside. Isn’t that sometimes just like us?

We can look pretty good on the outside. We go to work. We go to church. We smile when someone asks how we are doing and say, “I’m fine.” We keep moving, keep serving, keep taking care of everybody else, and from the outside everything appears normal.

But you know and God sees what is happening on the inside.

There can still be hurt that hasn’t healed. There can be anger we haven’t released. There can be disappointment we haven’t surrendered. There can be bitterness, resentment, fear, guilt, shame, or grief buried beneath the surface. And yes, there can be the infection of sin that we have tried to cover rather than confess.

The prophet Ezekiel spoke repeatedly about something deeper than simply changing our outward behavior. God wanted to do something within His people. God says in Ezekiel 36:26, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”

That’s healing on the inside.

Jesus isn’t interested only in making us look better. He wants to make us new. He wants access to the places we don’t let everyone else see. Sometimes that means allowing Jesus to open what we have tried to keep closed, expose what we have tried to hide, and remove what is keeping us from becoming who He is calling us to be. Because there is a difference between looking healed and being healed.

Maybe today we need to stop asking, “How do I look?” and begin asking, “Jesus, what is happening inside of me what needs healing inside ?”

David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10. That can be our prayer today.

Before we get too far down the road carrying something inside that Jesus wants to heal, let’s walk with Jesus. Let’s slip away in the stillness of the morning and just be with Jesus. Just sit at His feet and listen. Let’s trust Him enough to heal our wounds from the inside out staying in that place long enough to make a significant difference.

And then let’s allow the Great Physician to do His work. Everything may look fine on the outside, but Jesus wants us healed on the inside.

Today, keep walking with Jesus—and let Him heal you from the inside out.
