Praying for God’s Kingdom

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10

It is easier to pray for situations we see. To focus on issues and situations that seem just beyond on reach. It is easier to watch beyond ourselves thinking that a concerning situation might develop differently if we pray over it without considering our own position and involvement in that situation.

Today, my/our focus shifts to Kingdom praying. Specifically, towards building up and focusing on the Kingdom of God and how this kingdom must be what we are hearing the call to focus on and take up residence in : emotionally, mindfully, spiritually and physically.

I pray the Lord’s prayer regularly. It is a model for our prayer life. But I also confess that there is one part where I stumble, pause, and wrestle with it is these words – “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10

It brings up a boat load of images, feelings, thoughts, more prayers, more concerns, and greater yet more conviction! It makes this prayer more than just a Sunday morning routine, but instead a prayerful call and teaching of Jesus as He taught the disciples and teaches us how to pray.

But the question must remain, how does it bring change in our personal lives, our marriages, our homes, our families, our friend circles, our churches, our communities, and our worlds? How does the change that needs to happen in me through the Holy Spirit’s leading become more than a line a mere 15 second line in the Lord’s prayer become Kingdom building and life changing?

I believe it first of all changes the way we live and ask the question – am I a Kingdom builder or Kingdom destroyer? Am I hearing the call of Jesus to be in the world and not of the world sharing the hope of salvation to all people everywhere in the way that Jesus taught?

Have I realized that the Kingdom of God has nothing to do with a geographical territory, political party, human government, earthly organization, church denomination or being completely focused on me and what I want. But instead, is a holy place where His will is obeyed, His truth is proclaimed, His grace is received, and His love transforms lives.

That the Kingdom of God comes when we surrender to that good and perfect will of God to love God with our whole heart, mind, and everything and nothing takes priority over that. That the Kingdom comes when sinners receive forgiveness, broken people experience restoration, lost who were lost are brought home, and we learn what fellowship is.

The Kingdom comes when relationships are healed, churches are renewed, disciples are made and people discover new life in Jesus Christ.

We do not create the Kingdom of God through our own strength, programs, or plans. God establishes His Kingdom. Our calling is to surrender to His reign, recognize where He is already working, and faithfully participate in what He is doing.

Where does God’s Kingdom begin? Right at the threshold of our heart – where surrender takes place and submission to God’s will takes place and we pray – “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done” and we stand ready to respond as Kingdom builder for and in the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, holy is Your name. Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in my life, my family, my church, my community, and throughout the world. In Jesus name Amen.

Today’s prayer step: Pray the words “Your kingdom come, Your will be done” slowly three times. After each time, sit quietly and listen. Ask God to reveal one area of your life that needs to come under His rule. Write it down, surrender it to Him and take one faithful step of obedience today.
