Praying for the Church
“I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.” — Joel 2:28
For the early morning pre-dawn moments as I prepare for worship today, I am praying for more than a service that runs smoothly. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to be poured out on us.
Some will come ready to praise. Others will come carrying grief, questions, weariness, or a burden they have not spoken aloud. Some may wonder whether they have the strength to come at all. Wherever we begin this morning, the Spirit can meet us there.
Lord, pour out your Spirit as we sing. Let familiar words become fresh words of prayer and praise. Pour out your Spirit as Scripture is read and the message is shared. Give us ears to hear what you are saying and courage to respond. Pour out your Spirit as we pray, including in the silence when we cannot find words.
Move among the people from our children to our elders, our visitors and those who have worshiped here for decades. Bring healing where there is hurt, forgiveness where there is division, and hope where someone has nearly given up. Draw us closer to Jesus and closer to one another.
And when we leave the sanctuary, keep working in us. Let the prayer we offer today shape the way we love, serve, and witness tomorrow. May we worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly because your Spirit is alive among us.
This is the prayer on my heart this morning —
Prayer: Holy Spirit, we welcome you into our worship today. Open our hearts to Jesus. Fill our churches with your presence, guide those who lead, and meet each person who gathers. Pour out your Spirit on us, and send us into the world ready to do your will. Amen.
