Prayers for a Holy Heart
Devotionals on Prayers for Holiness — Part One

Psalm 27:4
Last night, my nighttime devotional focused on Psalm 27. After reading the psalm, I found myself reflecting on it through the night—not in a studious or theological way, but simply allowing its words to settle into my heart as I drifted in and out of sleep.
My thoughts turned to the sovereignty of God and His holiness. I was reminded that drawing closer to God begins with the desires of my own heart. During my prayer time, I found myself asking: What am I seeking today? Relief from the pressures around me? Answers to the questions before me? Or am I seeking God Himself?
Psalm 27 speaks from a place where trouble is real. David names enemies, opposition, and fear. Yet in the midst of those concerns, he turns toward the Lord. His words gave me three prayers that can shape our pursuit of holiness. Today, I want to begin with the first.
Lord, let Your presence become my deepest desire.
“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” — Psalm 27:4, KJV
“One thing.” Those words stop me.
My days often hold many things, each asking for attention. Responsibilities, concerns, and unfinished work can pull my heart in several directions. Yet David’s deepest desire is to dwell with God, behold His beauty, and seek Him.
I find myself asking whether that is truly my deepest desire, too. In the middle of everything before me, am I making room to be with God? Am I allowing His presence to shape how I approach the very things occupying my thoughts?
This becomes a very real problem in church life. That we become so busy doing the work of the church that we forget the church’s work, which in my estimation and understanding is to direct others towards Jesus and building up the kingdom of God here on earth. This is where a understanding of striving towards the spreading of scriptural holiness becomes key.
Holiness grows as we make room for God’s presence to shape us. As we behold His goodness, we begin to recognize attitudes and habits that need to change. His love reveals our selfishness. His faithfulness challenges our divided priorities. His purity awakens a longing for a clean heart.
But do we receive what He reveals? Do we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into the changes God is asking us to make?
This prayer brings my scattered thoughts to a place of surrender. It invites me to release whatever keeps God from becoming my deepest desire. And it leads me to another request: Give me a heart that longs for You.
A heart willing to be changed. A heart open to the hope God gives. A heart that trusts His wisdom even when His direction requires something difficult.
If we are seeking answers from God, we must also be willing to receive the answers He gives. His guidance may call us to wait, to let go, to make something right, or to take a step we have been avoiding. Receiving His answer becomes part of drawing closer to Him.
Today, our prayer becomes: Lord, bring my scattered desires into focus. Give me a heart that longs to be with You.
Prayer: Lord, in the middle of everything, may I see You. Make Your presence my deepest desire. Help me surrender whatever draws my heart away from You, and let Your Holy Spirit shape me in holiness. Give me the willingness to receive Your guidance and follow Your direction, no matter the cost. In Jesus’ name, amen.
More tomorrow as we continue with the second prayer: “Lord, help me answer when You call me closer.”
