Prayers for a Holy Heart – Part Three

Devotionals on Holiness

Lord, teach me to walk in Your way.

“Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.” — Psalm 27:11, NIV

Over these past two days, we have considered two prayers from Psalm 27: “Lord, let Your presence become my deepest desire,” and “Lord, help me answer when You call me closer.”

Today, we come to the third prayer: Lord, teach me to walk in Your way.

This morning, as I pray this prayer, one of my first thoughts is simply this: I need Jesus. For my own peace of mind and spiritual well-being, I need His help so that I do not become consumed by the distractions, attitudes, and pressures of our present culture. These three simple prayers help turn my heart toward Him as He shapes my life in holiness and prepares me for eternity.

What if we approached God with humility when we asked Him to teach us? We would acknowledge that we still have something to learn. Our understanding is limited. Our preferences may need to change. The direction we have chosen may need correction.

I find myself asking: Am I seeking God’s guidance with a willingness to follow, or am I hoping He will approve the direction I have already decided to take?

David prays for God’s way and a straight path while facing opposition. We, too, face daily struggles between good and evil. David needed guidance in the middle of difficulty, and so do we. Often, we need God’s direction most when pressure makes it difficult to pause and listen.

This final prayer invites us to respond in three ways.

1. Make room to receive what God is teaching us.

“Teach me your way, LORD.”

We need to make room for Scripture, prayer, worship, sharing the gospel, and recognizing God’s presence. As we ask Him to teach us, we must also be willing to receive His instruction and apply it to our lives.

Sometimes the lesson comes through a passage we have read many times. Sometimes another believer helps us recognize something we have overlooked. The Holy Spirit brings truth to our attention and gives us grace to respond.

Holiness grows as we allow God to change our understanding and our desires. We begin to love what He loves and recognize what needs to be surrendered.

Lord, make my heart willing to receive what You are teaching me.

2. Trust God with the next step.

“Lead me in a straight path.”

I often want to see farther down the road. I want to know where a decision will lead, how a difficulty will be resolved, and what the future will require. Yet following God involves trusting Him with what I cannot see while obeying what He has already made clear.

As I approach another birthday and a new season of life, I recognize that I had been conditioned to believe retirement would be the next step. A trusted friend and advisor asked whether retirement was God’s plan for my life—or whether God might be calling me into a new season of understanding, service, and surrender.

That question invites deeper prayer.

Perhaps the next step requires an honest examination of our inner lives: more time for prayer, Sabbath rest, holy fellowship, or the surrender of anger, jealousy, and pride. Perhaps there is a friend we need to contact or an apology we need to offer.

Before we focus on what everyone else is doing wrong, we need to examine our own relationship with God and others.

And while we seek direction for the future, we must remain present today. Who or what, right here and right now, needs our attention?

Lord, give me courage to follow the direction You have made clear.

3. Let His way shape our life together.

My deepest prayer these days has been for God’s guidance—for my own life and for our marriages, homes, families, churches, businesses, schools, and communities.

I pray that the atmosphere around us will change as we allow God to change us. That begins with you and me and how we respond to His grace.

As we walk with Him, we learn to walk differently with one another. We become more patient, more truthful, more generous, and more attentive to another person’s needs. We invite others to follow Jesus and help one another grow in faith.

This is part of spreading scriptural holiness: lives changed by God’s grace bearing witness to His redeeming love.

Here, we move from me to we. As God transforms our individual lives, those changes can reach our homes, our communities, and especially our churches. The church’s invitation becomes, “Come, let’s walk with God together.”

I know—these changes require a shift in our priorities and our thinking. They may involve sacrifices we hesitate to consider. I feel that challenge myself. Yet God’s grace enables us to surrender and follow where He leads.

As we conclude these three devotionals, I see how these prayers belong in my daily life:

Lord, let Your presence become my deepest desire. Draw me closer.

Lord, help me answer when You call. Make me more available to You.

Lord, teach me to walk in Your way.

We desire God’s presence. We answer His invitation. We learn to follow His way.

God’s grace meets us throughout that journey. His Spirit cleanses our hearts and enables our obedience.

Will we receive His invitation—and take the next step?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, make Your presence my deepest desire. When You call me closer, give me a heart that says yes. Teach me Your way, and lead me in a straight path. Through Jesus, forgive and cleanse me. By Your Holy Spirit, make me teachable, humble, and willing to obey. Shape us, Your church, into a holy people who walk together in Your love and invite others to know You. Let Your redeeming work begin within us and reach through us into the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Praying with you and for you as we learn to walk with God together.
