Psalm 27:14

“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” — Psalm 27:14, NIV

Before leaving Psalm 27 this week, there is one more prayer that I believe is essential—one we can carry with us as a breath prayer throughout the day.

Over the past three devotionals, we have prayed for God’s presence to become our deepest desire, for a willing response when He calls us closer, and for His guidance as we learn to walk in His way.

I am deeply convinced of the power of prayer, of praying “Thy will be done,” and of remaining faithful even when God’s answer does not meet my expectations. But what happens when we have prayed and surrendered, and the direction still seems unclear?

After praying, “Lord, teach me Your way,” I realize that I must also be willing to wait while He leads.

That can be difficult for me. Responsibilities continue. Decisions need attention. Questions remain unanswered. I want to know the next step so I can prepare, make a plan, and move forward.

Yet Psalm 27 closes with these words: “Wait for the LORD.”

David has spoken about fear, opposition, seeking God’s presence, and needing His guidance. His closing words call us to trust God while we wait.

As I sit with this verse, I find three reminders to consider.

1. Wait with trust.

“Wait for the LORD.”

There are times when I want an answer so much that I am tempted to force one. I can mistake my urgency for God’s direction or choose whatever brings the quickest result I want.

Am I willing to trust God when His timing differs from mine? Can I remain open to an answer that changes my plans?

Waiting invites me to bring those desires honestly before God and surrender my insistence on a particular outcome.

Lord, help me trust You with what I cannot yet understand.

2. Remain faithful today.

“Be strong and take heart.”

It takes courage to live faithfully when we cannot see clearly how things will unfold.

As I consider a new season of life, I am reminded that questions about tomorrow must not consume the attention I need to give today. There are people to love, responsibilities to fulfill, and opportunities to serve right before me.

While I wait for further direction, I can practice what God has already taught me: speak truthfully, pray earnestly, rest, forgive, and care for others.

I can also seek wise counsel and take the practical steps available to me. Waiting prayerfully helps me approach those steps with a quieter heart.

Lord, help me remain faithful to You today.

3. Receive strength for the waiting.

The King James Version expresses this promise: “He shall strengthen thine heart.”

Sometimes I pray for God to change a situation while overlooking the work He wants to do within me.

I am increasingly convinced that caring for others requires us to attend to our own spiritual lives. We need hearts willing to recognize where God’s cleansing and healing are needed. Even as we serve, we remain people being shaped by His grace.

In the waiting, the Holy Spirit can reveal impatience, loosen my need for control, and teach me to receive help. He can deepen my compassion for others who are waiting, too.

This is part of holiness: allowing God’s grace to shape how I live through uncertainty. His strength helps me resist bitterness, remain attentive to His Word, and continue loving when I feel weary.

The waiting itself may still be hard. We can trust God to meet us there.

Lord, strengthen my heart as I wait for You.

Today, perhaps this is the breath prayer we need:

As we breathe in: Lord, teach me to wait on You.
As we breathe out: Keep shaping my heart in holiness.

By Your power and in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

Praying with you and for you as we learn to wait on the Lord.
