Who’s at the Door?
Following Jesus from the Edges

“Behold, I stand at the door and continually knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him (restore him), and he with Me.” — Revelation 3:20, AMP
Where we live, it can be hard to tell when someone is at the door. We have installed cameras and a doorbell so that we can recognize who is there.
Here is a bit of honesty: The camera gives us the advantage of deciding whom we want to open the door to. Most everyone who comes to our door is welcomed and received. But there have been a few, though not many, whom we have ignored.
Unfortunately, there are also times when we are in a part of the apartment where we don’t know, see, or hear that someone is at the door. We may miss someone we really want to receive. Usually, at that point, the visitor calls to say they are here. The visit is rescued, the door is opened, and there is much celebration.
Lately, I have been praying for those who have opened the door of their hearts and lives to things that seek to harm them. In John 10:10, Jesus speaks of a thief who comes “to steal and kill and destroy.” But He also tells us that He came so that we might have life and have it abundantly.
What a difference it makes when we recognize who is at the door.
Think about this: Jesus is standing at the door, knocking and inviting us to receive Him. He desires more than a passing visit. He invites us into a relationship with Him—a life shaped by His presence, His love, and His saving grace.
I appreciate the way the Amplified Bible describes Jesus as continually knocking. When I have been distracted or have failed to listen, that image reminds me of His patience. He continues to call His people toward fellowship with Him.
In Revelation, Jesus speaks these words to the church in Laodicea. They are an invitation to hear His voice and open the door. As I read them, I also hear a question for my own life: Am I paying attention when Jesus calls?
Have I become so busy that I cannot hear Him? Have I welcomed things into my heart that are pulling me away from Him? Am I willing to open the door and receive what He wants to do within me?
When we receive Jesus, we receive His promise of forgiveness, restoration, and eternal life. We were made in God’s image and created for relationship with Him. What an awesome privilege it is to spend time with Him each day, knowing that He desires to be with us.
Jesus also gives us the Holy Spirit, our Advocate and guide. The Spirit helps us recognize what draws us away from God and gives us strength to resist evil and walk in the life Jesus offers.
Today, I am praying—and I encourage you to pray with me—that we will be willing to receive Jesus and welcome His presence in every part of our lives. May we surrender to the will of God and receive the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit.
Who is at the door of your life today? And are you ready to open it to Jesus?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for continuing to call us into fellowship with You. Help us hear Your voice above the distractions around us. Give us willing hearts to receive You, surrender to the Father’s will, and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Restore what has been broken and lead us into the abundant life You offer. Amen.
