Needing God Every Hour

An Every Hour Need

Following Jesus from the Edges

Pastor Calvin Cook – November 4, 2026

The hope and prayer of these devotionals is and always has been an opportunity to reflect on my own feelings even the turmoil in my soul and share them to another who might need to hear. To take those inadequate feelings that distract, faucets of sin, temptation, pain, moments of distrust, and surrender them unto God.

Just sitting alone in the presence of God, with an open heart to feel the leading of the Holy Spirit, the awesomeness of a heavenly Father that cares for me, and Jesus my Savior who has sacrificed his life, death and resurrection for me have many times been all that I feel I have and where I find my worthiness.

But yet there is the pressure of the world, requirements, agendas and the willful attempt of Satan to distract me from where God desires me to be.

A friend recently said to me that we know the conditions that keep us from God, righteousness and holiness yet we jump without knowing where we will land.

This morning as I tried to escape into my sanctuary as the playlist began to play the words of “I need Thee every Hour” began to turn the silence into a place of realization that God was calling me to enter into an understanding that I don’t just need God in these early morning times of devotion but every hour throughout the rest of the day.

Here are the words from Psalm 1 that penetrated and changed everything this morning :

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But who’s delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

The resolution that I don’t just need God in this quiet time this morning – I need God through the day, in every situation in every way. In the conversations I have, the decisions I make, the temptation that comes my way, even immediately seeking forgiveness for my sins before they are allowed to fester and destroy me.

I have this strong feeling this morning that this is what we all might need to consider that we don’t just need to call to God when in trouble or distressed. That a relationship with God can not be contained to these morning times of reflection. That fellowship in prayer is not reserved for moments but continually.

As I leave this moment – I hope today will be different and I not only follow Jesus from the Edges of my life but that I realize God, Father, Son, and Holy is walking before me, beside me, and behind me, but most importantly lives within me.

I want to rest in the closing words of Psalm 1 “For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. (Psalm 1:6)

For the one who needed to hear these words I wrote to myself – I pray they bring us all to a better place in our relationship with God.
